It’s not just the drivers who are getting better at trucking, according to a report by India’s largest trucking company.
The company’s chief executive, Amit Jain, has announced the launch of a new service called ‘Truck Driver for Life’.
The service, which is to be launched next month, will enable truck drivers to get paid a monthly amount of Rs 5 lakh (US$3,200) plus an annual stipend of Rs 1 crore (US $4,000) on top of the Rs 4 lakh (USD$4,200).
The idea behind the new service is to provide truck drivers with a financial cushion while they continue their training, he said in an interview.
“The concept is to make it easier for the truck driver to keep earning his salary.
We will not be using an online platform,” Jain said.
He added that he hoped to be able to offer truck drivers on the platform a monthly stipend similar to what the current government-run sector pays.
The startup, he added, would be able help the trucking sector by offering truck drivers a monthly income of Rs 3 lakh ($2,500) and a yearly stipend equivalent to Rs 2 crore (USD $4.000).
While the startup has been working on the project for the last two years, Jain believes it has the potential to be a game changer in the industry.
“Our goal is to start an online trucking service in the next two years.
If the technology improves, we can offer our service to the industry as well,” he said.
The trucking industry, however, remains a niche sector and is still highly dependent on the truckers to supply the truck.
Jain also said that the trucker will continue to earn his salary and he hopes to keep working there for many more years.
